Wow! Who could believe that exactly two weeks ago I was walking all I could hoping to get my little miracle baby to make his entrance into the worls and now he’s actually HERE! I have had a few questions on my delivery and so today I wanted to share our little guys story! Last week I ended up at my normal 39 week checkup and my blood pressure was extra high. The doctor said she wanted to recheck it and when it was high again she said, ‘we are sending you straight to the hospital to be admitted/monitored and most likely you all have this baby tonight!’ I had wanted to hear these words but when they were said I got excited and extremely nervous about the induction and impending labor. Everyone’s birth stories are so different so I was curious what mine would be so here it is….
After the doctor’s appointment I called my husband and told him we were having a baby! He met me at home and we traveled with our hospital bags and carseat to the hospital where my mom and dad were waiting for us! After getting checked in my options were given to me to consider for our induction. I had always thought when I imagined my delivery that my water would break in the middle of the night and I would rush to the hospital and have a baby, well this did not happen.
I had to have my water broken in the hospital to get thing started and to see if contractions would get stronger naturally causing my to continue to dilate without a lot of medicine. After an hour of walking around the floor with my Dad there were no changes from my 4cm which I was prior to induction so we moved to the next step: pitocin. I was started on a pitocin drip that started to create strong contractions! I was always so curious if I would not a REAL contraction when it happened and I can say, YOU WILL KNOW! I was having mild contractions for weeks that were helping me dilate each week starting at 35 weeks, but these were never enough to fully dilate me! I kept asking my mom to feel them and she verified they were contractions, but when the contractions on pitocin started, I had to strong breath and could not talk through them…. After an hour of these pretty painful contractions I got an epidural! I will stop here and say, if you have to be put on pitocin and are okay with an epidural I would start them close to the same time because the pain starts to get strong quick and it takes an epidural some time to start because most hospitals require you to get a whole bag of fluid prior, so order them close to the same time! I also wanted to mention that the epidural does not hurt (or didn’t hurt me!) I think after having strong contractions for an hour the epidural was nothing in comparison so it was practically painless.
After the epidural was put in I was told I would most likely dilate 1cm/hr. so I was expecting to have my sweet boy in the wee hours of the morning because I started at 3-4cm dilated prior to the pitocin. Our little man was so excited to meet his family and decided to come really quickly and was born at 10:16pm.
** PSA: The epidural does not take the pain/pressure away at all so you do still feel things…. I was curious about that and I did have pain, but it was manageable and I could feel myself push! Also, my legs had feeling after about 2 hours so it didn’t take that long to move/go to the restroom like I thought! I know everyone is different, but that’s how it worked on me!
Baby Brayden weighed 6lbs. 11oz and was 21 inches long. He was immediately put on my chest where my very first words to him were, “I Love You.” My husband and I had talked about what my first words to him would be and I told him it would be just that and it was. He was so alert and stared into my eyes and from that moment he stole my heart for the rest of my life. After desiring a child for years and going through two miscarriages this moment was one I played through my mind over and over and it was so much greater than I could have ever imagined. There are no words to describe the miracle of childbirth, but once you go through it you truly see and feel God. I have a small understanding of how much the Lord loves each of us.
Our little man is now 2 weeks old and we are doing great. He is such a great baby and only gets fussy if/when he’s got an upset tummy or is hungry, so we are very blessed. I will say breastfeeding is so special, but it’s also something that takes time for you and baby to get in sync and understand. I finally feel a little bit better today and feel like we have learned what positions and times work for us, but know you are not alone if you feel like your sole purpose at the beginning is being a food source. One of my doctors said, ‘your job for the first few weeks is just to feed and nourish your baby and don’t put pressure on yourself to do everything immediately.’ This is so true. Even if you don’t breastfeed, you are a rockstar. Raising a baby is the biggest commitment and blessing in life and I firmly believe majority of mothers are doing their absolute best, so tell a fellow Mom how amazing she is! If there is one thing I have learned in 2 weeks, it is that there are so many ways to do things and you have to do what works for you and your baby. So all of you moms out there YOU are all amazing!
I can’t wait to share more about our sweet little man and I hope to be able to share products that have been lifesavers and even products that I have. but didn’t need. I am starting that post now with what has worked for us, so stay tuned!
